All Clear at Military Landfill

All Clear at Military Landfill

Geo Environmental Group (GEG) recently completed a project on behalf of Mid Devon District Council (MDDC)  under the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 Part 2A. The land was owned by MDDC who originally owned an adjacent housing estate when it was built in the 1950’s, but this is now mostly privately owned. Anecdotal evidence suggested that the site was utilised in WWII by the War Office for the manufacture/servicing of searchlights and it now may contain millitary remnants disposed of from that period including munitions. GEG undertook a Phase I/II intrusive investigation of the site which incorporated a continuous specialist ordnance accessment prior to and during the excavation of a series of trial pits across the site. The trial pits indicated an absence of landfilled material and this was subsequently confirmed from chemical analysis results. As the Tiverton Gazette (30/6/09) put it: 'Land Clear of Pollution Risk'.
