Geo Environmental Group (GEG) where commissioned by NPS Group on behalf of Devon County Council under the Governments ‘Building Schools for the Future’ scheme to undertake a Phase I and Phase II Environmental Assessment of a school in Tiverton, Devon.
In addition, in accordance with Health & Safety Regulations, GEG undertook a Crane Platform Assessment (in accordance with CIRIA C703) for the use of a 140 tonne crane on the site. There was a potential risk of instability during lifting due to the presence of soft clays in the shallow alluvium deposits on the site. However, this was compensated by the use of larger pads designed by GEG to spread the loading satisfactorily.
All works were successfully completed to time and budget.
Historically, the site was used as a Prisoner of War internment camp and Ministry of Defence site in World War II. As such there was a potential risk that the site may have contained live or relict munitions and associated contaminants. A munitions survey was therefore undertaken as part of the investigation.
