Given this evidence, a limited Phase II intrusive investigation was undertaken consisting of trial pits with environmental sampling. Due to the potential for old ordnance on the site, GEG employed a specialist magnetometry surveyor to determine the potential for old munitions in the location of the exploratory positions, prior and during site works.

GEG found no evidence of ordnance or landfilled material, as made ground generally consisted of re-worked natural material and extended to depths of between 0.6m and 1.35m. Due to a limited layer of coal-derived ash near surface and subsequent slightly elevated levels of PAH’s, GEG recommended that if the site were to be developed into private houses with private gardens, a clean cover layer would be required. However, GEG concluded that no further action was required by MDDC under its Part 2A remit.
